About
Rochester Institute for Visual Arts
RIVA is a private fine arts atelier dedicated to the disciplined study of drawing and painting.
Designed for a select group of students, the studio offers a quiet, highly focused environment where technical mastery and visual sensitivity are developed with care and precision.
Led by a university instructor with over two decades of experience—including appointments at the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University—RIVA brings the rigor of formal training into an intimate, refined setting.
Method
Instruction is grounded in observation. Students are guided through the essential principles of draftsmanship and painting—form, light, proportion, and color—through sustained study and thoughtful critique. Work is developed across traditional media, including graphite, charcoal, oil, acrylic, and watercolor.
The emphasis is not on speed, but on clarity. Not on volume, but on depth.
Studio
RIVA maintains a deliberately limited enrollment.
Each student receives close, individualized attention within a calm and structured environment. The studio is suited for those who value focus, discretion, and a serious commitment to their work.
Philosophy
Art is approached here as a discipline. Skill is built through patience, repetition, and sustained looking. The aim is not only to create refined work, but to cultivate a lasting and discerning relationship with the visual world.
